It will certainly be unpleasant to be on the wrong end of some of them!

Here’s an interesting tip I came across recently. Ever need to drill an odd-sized hole, like you need a hole a wee bit smaller than, say 5/8”? Take a 5/8” spade bit and grind down the sides a hair to get your custom size. I use a disc sander as I feel like I can get a good grip on the bit when I’m grinding it, but you may prefer a grinding wheel. Be sure to grind off small increments, the same amount off both sides of the spade bit. And be sure to label the bit so you don’t later try to use it for drilling the hole size it used to be!

If you are using a spade bit with spurs on the wings, you can only take off a tiny amount on each side. If you need to drop a bigger amount off each side to get your custom size, try it with a spade bit that lacks those spurs… yeah, they’re available.
