I do the overlay technique with watercolor. I layer each color on then go back after its all dry and use a light wetting then remove excess paint to get the blends. Pencil is a rather hard substance so it certainly needs some kind of something for smoothing. That sounds great. I'm sure the art store will have it. She seems to have everything but Bestine.
