As for "how do they afford the ads?", there are two likely avenues:

1) investor money;

2) selling user data.

If it does well enough, they'll start having "paid enhancements". Once you have people hooked, you can get them to pay money to skip over the "grinding" to get in-game features. This is an oooollllldddd trick.
