Although I do agree that there wasn't a native population.

The British were the pirates of the sea and with their mighty fleet took almost anything they wanted. They invaded Buenos Aires twice in the early years of the 19th century, when Argentina was still a Spanish colony. They wanted a foothold in the South Atlantic and settled on the Falklands.
