Monday

When the USSR dissolved, Ukraine agreed to relinquish it's nuclear arsenal, thanks to assurances by Russia and the US of continued national sovereignty. Those promises proved hollow, and in the new international climate, nuclear defense is seen as the only "sure" defence against aggression by many nation states. Poland is now thinking about becoming a nuclear state and more will follow, I think.
