Consequently, all of my siblings and I grew up taking most things in stride and not afraid to try new things or go new places. You talk about riding public buses? Hell, kids nowadays aren't even allowed to ride on the school bus! Their parents drive them to school. Or if they do ride the school bus, I've seen cars lined up on the corner of the subdivision next to where I live so that little Johnny or Susie doesn't have to stand out in the cold. This is junior high I'm talking about. Geez. I didn't raise my kids with those sorts of fears either and they have grown up to be pretty well-balanced adults who can think for themselves.
Sometimes we don't like to admit that life is mostly random and that we have very little control over most of it. We just like to labor under the delusion that we do. We'd be much better off if we stopped fooling ourselves.
