Violence makes it more likely for a reactionary regime to come in. On the flip side, we have almost no participation in the political system, and if only a small fraction of the population was actively involved, there would be an enormous amount of progress. There's no reason to resort to drastic measures when even most of the basic ways of influencing the system haven't been tried.
