3. Weaver didn't send his son out to fight the FBI.

The Federal Marshals were doing covert surveillance to support an arrest and got the attention of a dog. The weavers heard the dog and thought it was a deer and father, friend, and son went out to get it because they were out of meat. The dog ran up to the marshals and one of them shot it to silence it right in front of the boy. The boy, being a child and not making fully thought out decisions fired at the marshals but missed in anger over the dog. One marshal's return fire round hit the boy in the arm and he turned and ran while the family friend with him shot dead a marshal with a single round from a bolt action rifle to defend the boy. Another marshal hit the boy with a burst of fire in the back and killed him.

The infamous part of the standoff was that leadership at the ATF/FBI didn't realize that the firefight was just a screwup and changed the rules of engagement to shoot on sight any adults. This led to the death of the mother who was shot through a door. It was that factor that the FBI report highlighted as a major error and changed how they handle these cases.
