3. An uncomfortable question nobody wants to ask

Years ago I got a flat tire in a downtown neighborhood of Los Angeles. My spare was also flat, but I was only 2 blocks from a service station. (That was back in the day when service stations did things like fixing flats). So I took the flat spare and rolled it down the street to the service station. The man at the station freaked out. He told me it wasn't safe for a white man to walk the streets of that neighborhood at night, and, after pumping up my spare for me, he insisted on escorting me back to my car and helping me change the tire.

It's very important to ask the question "When will it be safe for a black man to walk the streets of a white neighborhood?" It's also important to ask the question "When will it be safe for a white man to walk the streets of a black neighborhood?" I have a hunch that the answer to either question is the same answer for the other question, and that is when members of one race (any race) stop fearing and hating members of another. That sword cuts both ways.
