(951 posts)The meme going around was the idea that the only way to "legitimately" disobey the law is to submit yourself afterwards to law enforcement. But that's really just a tactic, and one that is only useful in certain conditions. 60s civil disobedience worked because police overreaction was broadcast for the country and the world to see. The size of protests resulted in enormous and grotesque violence that couldn't be concealed. Americans living far from the Jim Crow South were disgusted at what they saw on TV. The US national gov't was humiliated on the international stage, as its attempts to declare itself the Beacon of Freedom in the Battle against Communism clashed with what people could see on their TVs. Meanwhile, Snowden was acting alone, and he would have disappeared into a faceless federal prison. Poof. Maybe a closed-door trial, with the court documents redacted.
