Just Like Old Times?

by Keach Hagey
Politico, August 29, 2010

If the proposed sale of the Washington Times goes through, it will represent the return of the paper’s old guard, ousted by the current owner last autumn in a bitter family dispute.

Tens of millions of dollars in subsidies from the other businesses of its founder, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon — money that has propped up the paper from since the start — will likely come back, too.

But whether the sale would also return the Times staff to its former size or bring back its much-missed sports section is less clear. So, too, is the more pressing question: Will the Times, founded expressly as an anti-Communist, conservative counterweight to The Washington Post in the midst of the Cold War, continue to be a place where conservative writers like David Brooks and Tony Blankley make their bones?

Snip…

The two are now sitting down to work out a sale, which will go through in roughly a month if Joo’s group is satisfied by what it sees in this due diligence process. But no matter what happens to the Times, in some ways it has already accomplished one of its founding goals. The paper has served as a kind of incubator for conservative journalists who have gone on to bigger institutions, thereby boosting the conservative voice in the national discussion much the way the Rev. Moon set out to do when he founded the paper.

“For people like me, David Brooks, Tod Lindberg, we got our original experience editing, reporting, writing, writing columns there,” Podhoretz said. “For individual journalists who went on to other things, it was an extraordinary gift to be able to work in the nation’s capital.”

Continues…
