Speaker Johnson's swore in Rep. Matt Van Epps (R-Tenn.) around 36 hours after his Tuesday special election win. [View all]

House Democrats are furious with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) over the chamber’s latest swearing-in ceremony.

Johnson on Thursday swore in Rep. Matt Van Epps (R-Tenn.) around 36 hours after his Tuesday special election win. That swift turnaround contrasts sharply with the record-long wait Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.) endured, leading Democrats to accuse Johnson of playing partisan games.

“Rep. Van Epps has been sworn in LESS THAN TWO DAYS after winning his election,” read a post from the House Democrats X account. “Rep. Grijalva was sworn in 50 DAYS after hers. House Republicans only act swiftly when it suits them and their billionaire friends.”

Grijalva said that it “must be nice” for Epps in a post on X.
