Yes, even when done less than professionally, it's still quite the experience.

When I lived in Chicago, every Christmas season the Chicago Symphony would sponsor the Do-it-yourself Messiah at Orchestra Hall on Michigan Avenue. Thousands in Chicago would show up, get shown to our soprano/alto/tenor/bass sections in the audience seats, each of our seats with its own Messiah score book. As the orchestra played we were amazing and amazed at how great we sounded even if the thousands sang slightly slower than the professionals who did the solos onstage.

Get this. The conductor would have us warm up with this one !
