Actually, I wrote to McGOVERN during the campaign, saying that I admired him and of course would vote for him but that the most important thing was to beat NIXON and I thought somebody else had a better chance. Yes, he answered and the signature looked original, and he said he thought he had a good chance and hoped he could count on my support. I don't know what happened to the letter.

To make it worse, years later his heroic military record was publicized, which he had played down for the Hippies, and it might have helped if he had played it up.
