Fortunately, I was old enough and smart enough at that point to know what he was doing and I cut him off very quickly and point blankly.

But here’s the thing… From that day on, my cousin and I, who were very deeply close friends, never kept up a relationship. I think she probably wondered why or maybe she knew. And she is my only cousin, so it is not a large family, and I regret it deeply. But I could never speak to her after that in any serious way, or certainly couldn’t tell her what had happened. So we just drifted apart. My heart aches for that but to this day over 50 years later, I still don’t feel that I could tell her what happened. and by the way, my uncle ended up committing suicide, which made me wonder whether the same thing hadn’t happened to her, and she just wasn’t able to keep up a relationship with me for the same reason.
