I thought Carter did a great job as president, but he got sandbagged by the Republicans. Turns out that was possibly true in the literal sense... according to conservative historian Kevin Phillips the Bush/Reagan team told the Iranians not to release the hostages until after the election, and if so, the new administration would set them up with some sweet munitions deals.

Also, can you imagine where we would be now, if America had followed through on Carter's alternative energy plans? The entire world would have been buying that technology from us, all along!!!
