He gave them brains, he gave them experts with evidence based advice, he even gave them governors and mayors with firm directives.
They rejected everything that god offered them to enable them to save themselves. They rejected it all.
Can't really blame god for that.
(I'm an atheist btw, but find this a useful allegory.)
