6. There has been disaggrement among the two families about how this whole situation was handled

From what I've read the mother's family wasn't very happy about how the baby was used for a trump photo op. They wanted to remain neutral about politics at least publicly and didn't want the baby to be a part of that circus. As far as the mother's daughters are concerned, they were the result of previous relationships, so they aren't technically orphans. The older daughter was dropped off at cheerleader practice on the day of the shooting, while the younger girl was dropped off at her biological father's house. She's still with him. If I can find the link to story I read explaining it better I'll add it to my post.

Edited for a correction: It seems that the three children are with the mother's family. See tblue's post- #5

My heart breaks for these kids and the mother's family. As for the father's? I'm rapidly losing sympathy.
