5. That has been due to the rapid melt of detached sections of ice in the East Siberian Sea

Oddly enough, the northwest passage in Canada has remained blocked this year.

There appear to be holes in the ice coverage north of the New Siberian Islands which may indicate further breaking up of the main ice fields in that sector.
