(37,894 posts)By the time 1991 rolled around and Hillary's name became known nationally, conservatives had long been in the habit of demonizing individual and collective "liberals" (or to use the English word instead of wingnut-ese, non-conservatives). Liberal press, liberal judges, FDR, Eleanor Roosevelt, Earl Warren, etc. They thumped the drum against these people in conservative publications and radio.
They broadened the base of people engaging in this during and after the Vietnam war: dirty hippies, long haired freaks spitting on servicemen, and intensified the focus on individuals: Jane Fonda, Dan Rather, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, etc.
Carefully nurtured bile posing as righteous outrage had become old hat by the time the Clintons came on the national scene. And by that time conservatives wanted to guard against a Democratic administration undoing the "Reagan revolution", so they went full bore to defeat Bill. However, as the "pro-business" governor of a southern right-to-work state, Bill Clinton didn't fall neatly into Republican tropes about "tax and spend liberals", so they ditched the playbook they used against Dukakis and just started into reverse-fan fiction. This was born draft-dodging, dope-smoking, citizenship-renouncing, America-hating Hippy Bill and his wife, radical feminist Harpy Hillary.
Since Bill won anyway, Republicans (led by Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich) sought to hobble him by scandal-a-day, hours-long Two Minute Hates. Conservative media like the Washington Times and the newborn FOX News echoed and reinforced it.
Why do they hate Hillary so much? Because they enjoy depising what they like to despise, and be damned if it has much to do with reality.
