The Way Forward
Related: About this forumVisible, public pressure. Is it time to think of mass gatherings, and seek appropriate leader/speakers?
Thinking back to ways that we make change happen - even in this lazy age of being internet warriors - the Civil Rights movement, pressure to end our involvement in the Vietnam War - yes, that was then....but this is now.
Reverend Barber? Adam Kinzinger? Bishop Budd? Liz Cheney? Barack Obama? And so many more we could come up with -
Significant gatherings would press the issue - would MAGA really use force against its own citizens? How would the media cover it? I feel like this is a missing piece. It could start small and local. A few could be well organized and massive. The general theme has to be that our Democracy - our Constitution - is under threat from a violent cult and a wanna be dictator.
And yes - it could be dangerous. It will pull people out of their comfort zones. But isn't it worth it as another prong of a solution to make the next four years as uncomfortable as possible for "them"?
Thoughts?

Bishop Budde spoke truth to power, one brave woman.
One denomination has declared it will be a sanctuary for immigrants. Numerous Catholic dioceses in California have declared they will be sanctuaries for immigrants.
Trump can freely break the law and get away with it, what happens if he is called out for breaking the Ten Commandments? Will he sic his band of Magats on religious leaders? Not a good look for Trump.
Religion may be our salvation from Trump.

(48,223 posts)opposition will be ready. For now our leaders set the tone and pace. AG Tish James has stepped up, as has Gov. Pritzker. We don't know at present how much of a tinderbox we're facing. Organize, organize.

(53,414 posts)possible, to duplicate the energy of political movements decades ago, and that will take artists as much as politicians.
Festivals - FREE festivals, not something for Ticketmaster to make more money off - could be an important part of this. Could bring people together away from social media platforms that are too controlled by algorithms and Trump-friendly billionaires.
And festivals would also offer exposure to musicians who are not making enough money off streaming platforms and live performances, and who often have to share even merchandise sales with venues where they perform, so selling merch at a free festival would at least let them make a bit of money.

Eliminate Dept of Education - in my family there are teachers, social workers, librarians, vice principals, IT admins. Every single one of them voted for Trump. Not me is alive and well in Texas.
Last night on Hannity the orange one was ranting about Biden when Hannity interrupted him to talk about the economy. According to the news Trump replied I dont care.
I live in a State that is prone to hurricane, flooding and, yes, prairie wildfires. Some folks here are watching what Cheeto man is saying about California and the federal governments role in disaster recovery. Members of my own family have received FEMA help 3 times over the years. Yet they are railing against Californians receiving ANY help.
He doesnt mean it. Uhhhh yes he does.
Protesting even nonviolently isnt gonna change their minds - hardship might.
I pray the DNC is busily making campaign ads from the first 3 days of this administration.
I also wish California would stand up with other blue states and cut off funds going to support red states like Kentucky and South Carolina. 😬
This will be a bare knuckle, down in the mud blood and beer fight, in my opinion.
We need more religious leaders like Bishop Budde to stand and deliver.
Just a few random thoughts this am.

(816 posts)Millenials and younger grew up with the threat of school shootings every day.
I hope that horrific experience may have helped to steel them to the threat of police and militia violence if they protest.
And also look at the younger generations for leaders.
