(Moved here from GD) We need a central figure, someone with a bully pulpit who can rally the troops.

People are desperate to do something. You are, I am.

I see people in threads trying to figure out how to organize “no spend days.” I see people in threads trying to organize boycotts of companies who have capitulated without a fight. I see people calling for Democrats to flood the phone lines of our Democratic representatives who are voting for the crap being passed, thereby normalizing this disaster.

These are excellent ideas. The powers-that-be fear our anger, our buying power and our primary power. Flexing these en masse would have an effect.

The problem is, these are tiny voices. Small pockets of people shouting against the wind will not be heard. Those excellent ideas and intentions will never amount to enough force. We have been thinking this way since 2016 and none of our good intentions have amounted to the kind of movement we need.

We need a central figure or group who have a bully pulpit who can rally us together into specific directions so our efforts will have force.

Who could do that?

I am guessing some would say Bernie. But I think he’s a guy who communicates policy. I don’t think he’s the guy to respond to crisis. I have no idea who the central figure should be. Perhaps it shouldn’t even be someone in Congress. Obama? Kamala? Pete? Stacy Abrams? Howard Dean, even? I actually think Pete and/or Stacy might be great at it. They’re strategic, excellent communicators, and they just get stuff done.

If you had to name someone to be a central, rallying figure to organize Democratic citizen opposition, who would it be?

We have some numbers here. Maybe we could recruit someone.

Wasn't being an asshole and no ill intent. Just kind of hard to offer up any opinion that might go against the grain when you have to be in fear of what you say might get you tossed. I get that the mission statement of DU has parameters, but it still ain't easy to not step over the line at times. lol Cheers. Hope it gets some play and discussion here.

A champion of the people... Someone to "stand in the gap"...

Someone w/ the fire of Nancy Pelosi when she would face down the Mango Monster...

Someone at least as tall as Gavin Newsom...

Dems need their very own "Gojira"...

I have engaged in many such discussions on DU.

I don't think we need one leader - I think we need many. Chris Murphy from CT has been one of the Senators who has been giving voice to what is going on. Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff are both being very vocal. I like Sheldon Whitehouse, but I am not pleased that there is a rumor he may vote to confirm RFK Jr.

There are many in the House of Representatives who are the right leaders for this time, such as Jamie Raskin and Dan Goldman and Jasmine Crockett.

I think we need to show our support for our reps in Congress who are indeed working hard for us. And we need to communicating with our reps about our concerns, as well.

Many of the prominent hosts/anchors at MSNBC are getting the word out about what is going on. Rachel, Nicolle, Chris, and Lawrence are not backing down. (Hopefully they will continue to have the support of the network.)

I think one voice limits who listens - some don't like this one or that one because of their own filters.

I think there are a lot of leaders in the legal watchdog community, like Mark Elias at Democracy Docket and Noah Bookbinder at CREW. I am trying to find out who is taking action.

I am wondering how we bring together those who want to help the litigation efforts and other efforts to save our democracy and our Constitution? Should it go through the Way Forward forum?

UPDATE: I was just thinking about my long reply. I am noticing two conversations that seem to be overlapping. One is the "Way Forward" which is the purpose of this forum, and the other is the "resistance". I think we need leaders for both. I have been more focused on the "resistance" personally, because I don't know how we get to a free and fair election in 2026 or 2028, without the righting of some wrongs coming from the administration take-over. IMHO

Thank you for opening up the question and allowing my (newbie) input.

They can be the more or less permanent spokespersons and presence, while younger people, who will be involved in primaries provide new ideas, charisma and punch.

Biden, Clintons, Obama... As "elder" statespeople, they can be the guides... Tim Waltz + Kamala Harris... They can bring the joy + enthusiasm...

Jamie Raskin + Adam Schiff... They can bring the law + the history... Bernie Sanders, Liz Cheney, Adam Kinsinger...

They can help w/ the big picture + insights from the other side of the fence.... There are many others...

But the force for the future must come from America's young people... Let's help nurture their big dreams + create an unshakeable moral center.

Jasmine Crockett, Maxwell Frost, Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock... There are more...

Is there a young Native American w/ leadership qualities that we may have overlooked???

A retired military person??? An educator ready to branch out??? A physician fed up w/ the direction medicine has taken???

Who will stand in the gap??? Is there a young Lincoln??? A young JFK??? Who can live, breathe, serve + save America???

Pete Buttigieg is around that age and he’s smart as a whip. I could see him as a premier leader.

But I think we need a celebrity to turn politician like Clooney or Ryan Reynolds...

The population is shallow and vapid...

As we all know... pretty much anyone can BE POTUS, it's the people surrounding the POTUS who do all the work and make the analysis.
