Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) - 3/28/2025

I apologize that there are so few "official" videos available, this practice by HBO appears to have started last season. If any are uploaded in the meantime, I'll definitely add them. But I wanted to share what's available before the "bootleg" videos are gone.

Gavin Newsom on "Platforming"

California Governor Gavin Newsom joins Bill to discuss the reaction to his podcast and the struggling Democratic brand.

New Rule: Trump Devotion Syndrome

The MAGA cult's fealty to Trump is rapidly approaching North Korea levels.

Overtime: John McWhorter, Rikki Schlott

Bill and his guests continue their conversation after the show.

Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the entire interview with Gov. Gavin Newsom, Democratic governor of California and host of the new podcast This is Gavin Newsom; entire panel discussion with John McWhorter, opinion writer at The New York Times and author of the new book Pronoun Trouble: The Story of Us in Seven Little Words; and Rikki Schlott, columnist at the New York Post and co-author of the new book The Canceling of the American Mind; Bill's "Funny Bit"; and the opening part of New Rules. It won't last long, as usual:

And I thought of you immediately when I saw that John McWhorter was on the panel!

...but I had already read the first chapter! LOL! I just finished chapter two: "Poor Little You" which is all about the second person pronouns. It was really interesting with LOTS of shit I had never known. The first chapter was about "I and me", but I knew most of the info, though a few things were new. Chapter two rocked! The next one is about "We" .

I never realized/knew that "you" actually started out as the indirect pronoun for "Ye" and was plural! So, the singular was Thou/thee and the plural Ye/you! Eventually it all faded away until "You" came out the victor. Did you know that? Also, there were power dynamics involved in which term was used. "You" was used by the upper class to talk about the lower class, including women, and "Thou" was used to speak to anyone's "better". Did not know that either. McWhorter used a few examples from Shakespeare which made the dialogue more nuanced than I ever knew!

It is a fun book, and I will probably finish before week's end.

Newsom pulled me in and I stayed for McWhorter (who totally crushed it).

Thumbs up to Newsom for reminding Bill that his issues over home improvement struggles begin with local building codes, not the state.
