These are important stories to tell. My concern is who will hear them. Many of the same people who will be moved by these women's plight will still vote against universal abortion access. They will comfort themselves with the knowledge that if something happens to someone that THEY love, they have the resources to help. As for all those others, well, their motivations for an abortion are suspect, so they must be prevented from being "irresponsible" or "immoral".

The human spirit and mind are the most complicated things to fathom in the universe. This fact is especially well illustrated in the stories of fervent anti-abortion women who seek abortions, get them, and, soon after, rejoin the anti-abortion protest lines outside of clinics.

God bless every woman who has to go through this kind of terror. And may there be a special place in hell for those who legislate this kind of murder.

I trust it will resolve sensibly, but the fact that it happened is insidious.

I am not surprised by this truth. In grammar school -- 8th grade -- a nun presented the class with a moral dilemma: a pregnant woman is found to be carrying a child that will die during delivery and kill her, as well. The Church, of course, has ruled against abortion of any kind, deeming it the murder of an innocent soul. The pregnant woman, a devout Catholic, is told by a doctor that the child can be aborted and she would live a happy, healthy life and even be able to have children after the procedure .

Well, said Sister Joan, what should the mother decide to do?

Turns out the correct answer was the mother must let the pregnancy go to term and allow God's will to be done. In other words, to avoid the fiery pits of hell, the mother has to agree to die with her baby. To die unnecessarily, it must be emphasized.

Such a compassionate and loving rule! Thus began my gradual departure from the institution that touted itself as "the One True Church founded by the Son of God."
