(13,948 posts)And he is spot on about one thing: We must break out of the us vs. them-ism.
If I've learned anything from participating in Braver Angels events, its that talking about values, honestly, and listening carefully, and reflecting back instead of arguing, creates connections that break down stereotypes -- my own, and the "red" person I'm talking to. Asking questions. How did you come to believe that? Reflecting on why you believe what you believe. Sharing the experiences about how you got to where you are, instead of just throwing conclusions at one another.
When you are clear about your own moral principles, what your "red line" issues are, it is NOT about compromise or pandering. You can have honest, meaningful conversations. It's not about changing minds. It's about connecting. And paradoxically, when I've felt like I've connected, I've seen minds change -- even though changing minds was NOT my goal.

(259,315 posts)I've thought it about the comparison quite a bit, and though the felon has put this nation in much more danger, the big difference was that Nixon's own party turned against him which led to his resignation. With the felon-in-chief it seems like the more laws and norms he violates, the more his sycophants defend him - but it looks like that may be changing the closer the Midterms get. *fingers crossed*
