Let's talk about Trump's FEMA, flooding, and Hawaii.... - Belle of the Ranch

Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Trump's FEMA, flooding, and Hawaii.

Hawaii has been hit with the worst flooding it's seen in more than 20 years. Rain and flooding led to thousands of evacuations on the north shore of Oahu. And there were evacuation orders on Maui, too. In Oahu, hundreds of people were pulled from the floodwaters. The most surprising part is actually the best news. So far, the number of people lost stands at zero. Let's hope that number holds.

Houses were destroyed, cars were swept away, and thousands need help. The state has already said they're looking at more than a billion dollars in damages. The recovery time probably won't be quick. Hawaii is an island and a lot of material takes time to get there. If you're watching from there, it's important to remember that emergency responders were saying more flooding is still possible as late as Tuesday morning. It does look like they're saying the risk of Wahiwa Dam failing has passed as the water levels dropped.

Only about 4% of homes in Hawaii have flood insurance. There's still a backlog of payments from a Trump officials policy that requires a personal sign off for payments to cities over $100,000 from previous disasters. This would normally be the part in a video about a disaster where we tell locals where they can get assistance and file with FEMA. The Hawaii page on the FEMA site currently says, “notice due to the lapse in federal funding, portions of this website may not be updated, and some non-disaster assistance transactions submitted via the website may not be processed or responded to until after appropriations are enacted.

When you search for disaster recovery centers in Hawaii, it says, "There are no active disaster recovery centers for this location at this time."

It is worth noting that Hawaii Emergency Management Agency is saying that at least some FEMA personnel have made it out to do an assessment. We were able to find a listing of American Red Cross emergency shelters from before the flood that we'll link below in the description.

It's at this point that I would remind people that Trump has tied DHS funding, which includes FEMA funding, to not only immigration funding, but also to what he's calling the SAVE Act, which for whatever reason, he wants to have provisions about trans people playing sports. Funding for emergency response, airport security, and so on have now been tied by Trump and the Republican party to trans sports issues because the party has lost all semblance of having actual policy and is now just running on the memes.

Everybody should buckle up because the longer Trump demands the DHS funding shutdown go on, the worse it's going to get for Americans and the economy.

Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
