Former ICE inmate speaks to FRANCE 24 about detention conditions

Julien Pereira is a 26 year old French citizen. In 2025, he was arrested and detained by ICE for a month. Speaking to FRANCE 24, he dives into his detention conditions, why he got arrested, and how he sees the current situation in the US.

“The prisons are run by private companies that make money by keeping you locked up as long as possible,” Julien Pereira explains. “It’s a real detainee factory. A private machine running at full speed.”

He finally got to a court hearing and paid $5,000 bail before he was unceremoniously dumped at the Mexican border with no money, no documents, and a dead cellphone. He took shelter with a nonprofit.

Like we're living in a really bad movie. I'm often on the verge of tears these days.
