'Taylor Swift Tax' Stirs Bad Blood With Rhode Island Homeowners - BusinessWeek Daily

Jul 2, 2026 Latest Videos from Bloomberg Radio
Bloomberg News Boston money and power reporter Greg Ryan said that a Rhode Island tax increase on second homes is not just impacting the wealthiest residents like Taylor Swift, but that many residents with family properties worry about the impact on their finances. The Rhode Island tax comes as some other cities and states move to tax second homes at a higher rate, like the pied-a-terre tax proposed in New York City by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

in our area, care only about making money when they sell. They don't care about the community, don't do anything to help, don't pay income tax here, use all our facilities for 5 months, use our doctor's appointment times, clog our roads and restaurants, ruin our neighborhoods by renting to everyone and anyone who doesn't know what home ownership is, and bring their MAGA habits with them.

If you can afford a second home, you can pay more in taxes. I'd even charge them money for using the libraries, police, parks and parking they don't pay for.

I have to pay taxes on my car and an EV tax for the gas I don't use but out-of-staters buying second homes here don't.

House taxes should be doubled but then residents get a 50% break on their primary residence if they are state citizens.
