That time, for me was very influential and I became active in my Union and hope til the day I die, the fire in my belly never goes out.

(254,691 posts)My grandmother told me that she could be a schoolteacher or a nurse. She chose to be a teacher and went to what they then called "normal school" for training and her first job was in a one room fairly rural schoolhouse where some of her students were older than she was. And she fought for them, some worked as well and she tried to make sure that as many as possible took the NY State Regents exam which gave them an advantage in the job market. I have no doubt that she did an excellent job, but she told me that if she was in school now, she'd want to become an environmentalist. And she was proud that her four children - and her 11 grandchildren - all graduated from college. She took me to my college interviews.

(9,327 posts)that his "Just for fun" - which he did say - will one day replace "Let them eat cake" - which Marie Antoinette did not say - as the last word in callousness. At 80, I won't be around to see it unless it happens really, really fast.
* If she said anything at all, which is not proven, she said "Let them eat brioche." And that is as likely to have ben naïvete as much as anything else. I have seen solid evidence that (a) she was not racist, and (b) that she was naïve enough to think other people were not racist either. Incidentally, she was also not French but Austrian -in fact, a Hapsburg.

(254,691 posts)In school they started teaching us French early since we're in Northeastern New York not far from Canada. And we USED to get many French Canadian visitors in the summers here. When I was in school I had a summer job at a terrific amusement park. And in class we had to pick a French name and being kind of a wiseass, I chose the name Antoinette. I actually ran into my old French teacher at my summer job, she was there with her husband and she had two little girls. When she saw me she shouted "Antoinette!" and we had a nice visit.
