What Trump's Cabinet Appointments Mean for U.S. Foreign Policy - Amanpour and Company PBS

Well before he takes office, Donald Trump has made clear a change of direction in U.S. foreign policy by his cabinet appointments: Defense nominee Pete Hegseth, charged with exorcising "wokeness" from the Pentagon; Russia supporter Tulsi Gabbard, in charge of Intelligence; and vaccine conspiracy theorist Robert Kennedy Jr., in charge of public health.

On Ukraine, Russian officials say they would welcome Trump-brokered negotiations, saying any talks "need to be based on the realities of Russian advances." At present, Russian forces are advancing faster than at any point this year.

Meanwhile, The New York Times reports that Elon Musk met with Iran's U.N. Ambassador on de-escalating tensions with the United States, marking a return of the freelance diplomacy that was a hallmark of Donald Trump's first term.

Kori Schake has served at the State Department, the Pentagon, and the National Security Council. She joins the show from D.C. to discuss. - Originally aired on November 15, 2024.
