Robin Benway’s “Far From the Tree” is a story about the emergence of love and support in an unconventional familial structure. It also explores the challenging, deeply personal topics that some teens have to confront as they mature: the way alcoholism devastates a family, the emotional complexities of adoption, inescapable racism, LGBTQ+ love, and the realities of teen pregnancy.
“Sometimes, as a teenager, things just feel so wacky.,” says Benway. “You feel so big one minute and you feel so small the next.” Life as an adolescent is hard.
