If it minimized to a "Hamburger" icon, that would be pretty standard and intuitive

But I don't think it would be too difficult to include as an option. If you removed the sidebar what would you want to happen -- the right side of the screen just filling the space and taking up the whole width?

... and presumably shift into mobile device mode.

Sometimes I have 2 windows side-by-side on a monitor, and this would help a lot.
