Bernie Sanders, in a wide-ranging chat with CNBC’s John Harwood, discusses personal issues, his economic agenda and his hope to become a 21st century version of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Like many patients who undergo successful catheterization, Sanders says he has actually benefited from renewed energy.

Sanders also likens fossil fuel executives to tobacco executives: “These are liars. These are criminals.”

Over healthful green smoothies in a Des Moines coffee shop, I sat down with Sanders to discuss his health, his economic agenda and his hope to become a 21st century version of the president of his infancy, Franklin D. Roosevelt. What follows is a condensed, edited transcript of our conversation.
