Another reason to love Biden: Letter to sexual assault victim/ VAWA

This story involves a terrible miscarriage of justice. In a clear-cut case of sexual assault (charges lowered from rape as according to CA. law), the judge gave a slap-on-the-wrist sentence to defendant Brock, who was a star swimmer at Stanford University. His explanation for the ludicrous
sentence was that he was concerned about Brock’s promising future.

Brock’s victim, never named, wrote a powerful, eloquent open letter of protest in which she talked about the crime’s impact on her and the judge’s obvious lack of concern for HER future, complete disregard for her value. Biden then wrote an open letter back to her.

Snip————————————-

Vice President Joe Biden, who in 1990 introduced the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), has penned an open letter to the Stanford University sexual assault victim in which he commends her for speaking out in court against her assailant.

In recent years, the issue of sexual assault on U.S. college campuses has been gaining attention. A judge's recent decision to give Stanford University athlete Brock Turner, the former college swimmer who was convicted of sexual assault, a light six-month sentence has sparked widespread controversy and calls for his removal.

As a senator, Biden introduced VAWA to Congress in June 1990. The act became a landmark piece of legislation that changed the way the country has responded to domestic violence and sexual assault.
