Think Gravel runs every 4 years, kinda like Bernie's been doing lately. In that video there is a short piece where he was calling Biden arrogant during a 2008 debate. Obama and Hillary were kinda laughing at him.
Funny thing is, he says some stuff that I fully agree with. Kinda like when your crazy old uncle comes over for Thanksgiving and says "this turkey and mashed potatoes taste real good!".

What is going on now is like being moved back in time by about a century. People who have lived only after the Second World have experienced something unique in human existence --- an absence of any need to seriously fear some trifling complaint, a cough, a headache, a run-down feeling, might issue in death before a week had passed. We are not used to it.

(1,089 posts)so naturally wasn't paying much attention at the time.
I heard a story a day or two ago about a woman who survived the 1918 flu and who had a twin baby sister die from it lost her battle against this virus. Tragic irony.
Went out for the first time in weeks earlier this week to get a few groceries. My partner had done a real good job stocking up over a couple weeks before it got really bad so we're still in real good shape for the time being. She has a badly disabled daughter she cares for who is very susceptible to a virus like this since handicapped people are a low priority should medical resources become scarce. So we figured I should be the one who does the shopping in the future to reduce the risk of exposing her.
Some people were wearing gloves and a few were wearing masks, but most like me wore nothing even though I had brought some along in the car. Felt stupid putting them on so didn't. That may change next time I go out early next week. Strange to come home and then have to isolate yourself after picking up a little bread and a couple gallons of milk...wondering if doing that simple act will end up costing you your life a week or two later.

I am not just old enough, but have had heart surgery and have leukemia, which in recent years has seen me in hospital several times with pneumonia, among other things. I got out of hospital as this thing was breaking, the day the oil prices first took a tumble, and they were discovering the nursing home in Washington State. I'm no invalid, and to look at me you'd think I was healthy enough, but I am pretty much what this thing eats for breakfast on a busy day. Doctor told me to do my best imitation of a hermit, and wished me luck. I said that's about all there is, isn't it, and he agreed. We understand one another, he's a good fellow. He was even then enraged by the lack of national leadership and organization for confronting this. He must be spitting tacks by now.
Wear the damn mask, kid.

That bit of tripe at least sold millions of copies and made a rich gal out of the authoress. Sanders' 'Vermont Freeman' column can't have had more than a handful of readers.
I will have to figure out how to look it up, but in 2016 early in the 'Bernie' phenomenon, I remember reading a piece by a woman whose mother was involved with that magazine, newspaper, whatever they called it. She recalled how her mother caught Sanders raiding the refrigerator, leaning into it to really hunt for what might be way in back, and smacked him across the bottom with a broom, yelling that he should get out of their fridge. Apparently it was a semi-commune arrangement, not too uncommon at the time, and vigilance had to be exercised in the kitchen, if things bought for her family were to be preserved from the depredations of several young fellows of similar stripe to Sanders often about the place.

The realization Sanders was someone of whom I could say 'True horror is realizing one of the guys on the couch in the commune is running for President' made it permanently impossible for me to take him seriously. Just look at Rogan's subscribers and the kind of guests and messages he feeds them. He chooses guests to stoke hostility and negativism in receptive types from the far left, across the center, to the right, and to the far right and on to the far left again.
(They don't speak to sensible, reasonable people from the liberal and conservative mainstreams, that large majority of Americans, or to good-hearted people of any ideology.)
As for "socialism," uhuh. Populists flock to leaders who promise them a mob to join. Despite the rhetoric of whichever leader is promising that mob, what replaces the "establishment" they destroy is far less important, some not genuinely concerned with that at all, as many studies of populist movements have proven over and over.
Nothing demonstrates that more than the movement of many of these wannabe revolutionaries between the Trump fascistic/nationalist and the Sanders LW class-warfare populist movements. The last leader standing gets them. Socialist, fascist? Something else? Whatever.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
The Magistrate
(96,043 posts)There is more overlap than many suppose, or it is comfortable to acknowledge.
It is not generally recalled that at its origin fascism was a modernizing tendency which claimed would bring ordinary folks better and more prosperous lives. The places where it took deepest root after the Great War were industrially and socially backward by compare to Western Europe, such as Spain or Hungary, or had been countries which were severely wounded as societies in the Great War, such as Italy and Germany (though Nazism is not quite fascism despite some resemblances).
What we on the left are wont to denounce as 'corporatism' was presented by promoters of fascism as bringing capitalism under control of a government that would temper the excesses of bosses. Whether the promises of betterment for all were sincere or not does not matter, because they were frequently believed.
A leading purpose of early fascist leaders was giving workers a reason for patriotism, and they understood this required material gains by the working class in the new system. They viewed capital as exploitative, often in tones quite similar to Socialist agitation, and denounced this as driving workers away from national identity and into the hands of the anti-patriot Socialists. And when in power, there was often some follow-through on these promises, though it was always accompanied by rigorous persecution of adherents of Socialist parties, or Anarchist parties, let alone of Bolsheviks or Communists. By no means all workers in these places saw such persecutions as aimed against them, or even as wrongs to be decried.
Patriotism is not only a very strong emotion, it is a popular one. People want to love their country, to view it as a good thing, and to identify with it. Without the 'internationalism' Socialist agitation incorporated from its earliest days, the movement might have gone a good deal further.
