The crisis is laying bare the brutality of an economy organized around production for the sake of profit and not human need. The logic that the free market knows best can be seen in the prioritization of affordability in health care as millions careen toward economic ruin. It is seen in the ways that states have been thrown into frantic competition with one another for personal protective equipment and ventilatorsthe equipment goes to whichever state can pay the most. It can be seen in the still criminally slow and inefficient and inconsistent testing for the virus. It is found in the multi-billion-dollar bailout of the airline industry, alongside nickel-and-dime means tests to determine which people might be eligible to receive ridiculously inadequate public assistance.
The argument for resuming a viable social-welfare state is about not only attending to the immediate needs of tens of millions of people but also reëstablishing social connectivity, collective responsibility, and a sense of common purpose, if not common wealth. In an unrelenting and unemotional way, covid-19 is demonstrating the vastness of our human connection and mutuality. Our collectivity must be borne out in public policies that repair the friable welfare infrastructure that threatens to collapse beneath our social weight. A society that allows hundreds of thousands of home health-care workers to labor without health insurance, that keeps school buildings open so that black and brown children can eat and be sheltered, that allows millionaires to stow their wealth in empty apartments while homeless families navigate the streets, that threatens eviction and loan defaults while hundreds of millions are mandated to stay inside to suppress the virus, is bewildering in its incoherence and inhumanity.
Naomi Klein has written about how the political class has used social catastrophes to create policies that allow for private plunder. She calls it disaster capitalism, or the shock doctrine. But she has also written that, in each of these moments, there are also opportunities for ordinary people to transform their conditions in ways that benefit humanity. The class-driven hierarchy of our society will encourage the spread of this virus unless dramatic and previously unthinkable solutions are immediately put on the table. As Sanders has counselled, we must think in unprecedented ways. This includes universal health care, an indefinite moratorium on evictions and foreclosures, the cancellation of student-loan debt, a universal basic income, and the reversal of all cuts to food stamps. These are the basic measures that can staunch the immediate crisis of deprivationof millions of layoffs and millions more to come.
The Sanders campaign was an entry point to this discussion. It has shown public appetite, even desire, for vast spending and new programs. These desires did not translate into votes because they seemed like a risky endeavor when the consequence was four more years of Trump. But the mushrooming crisis of covid-19 is changing the calculus. As federal officials announce new trillion-dollar aid packages daily, we can never go back to banal discussions of How will we pay for it? How can we not? Now is a moment to remake our society anew.

(96,043 posts)The sooner people, especially 'Bernie's' well-meaning supporters, get it through their heads what 'Bernie' actually is doing, the better it will be for our people and our country.
The fact is Sanders campaigns not to gain the Democratic Party's nomination for President, but to weaken if not wreck the 'Democratic Establishment'. For 'Bernie', ousting Trump and ending the Republican majority in the Senate is barely an afterthought to this long-standing purpose. Once Sanders' supporters face this fact squarely, they may be able to decide honestly what their best course in this election is: voting against 'Bernie' in any future primary, and for Mr. Biden and Democrats all down the ticket to the lowest office on the ballot come November.
It is probably true that Sanders sees destroying the 'Democratic Establishment' as an essential precondition to defeating Trump et al, and so by his own lights he means it when he says he will do all he can to defeat Trump. But that belief is so self-serving and delusional it deserves not just scorn but contempt.
As with Trump, the only real cure is to deprive the man of the oxygen of worshipful attention. The effect would be that of a bucket of water on the wicked witch of Oz....

(116,572 posts)That seems somewhat arrogant and I don't believe that you are one of the administrators for this site.
The bill for the veterans was in response to all of the veterans that were dying in hospitals across the country. That travesty happened while Bernie was chair of the Veterans Affairs committee--so in other words, he was fixing a mess because under his watchful eyes things got screwed up. The bill was passed almost unanimously because no representative or senator would want to be seen as voting against veterans benefits so almost any amendment introduced was going to get approved and there weren't any negotiation skills involved.
The Federal Reserve Transparency Act was actually an idea that was conceived by Ron Paul and the Tea Party. Bernie latched onto the idea and sponsored it in the Senate in the 111th, 112th, 113th, and 114th Congresses. By the way, I don't believe that the libertarian bill ever became a law so it serves as an example of Bernie's lack of competency as a legislator.

(32,640 posts)In 1998 Sanders voted in favor of the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, which said: "It should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime."
Later that same year, Sanders also backed a resolution that stated: "Congress reaffirms that it should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime."
Sanders also voted for the 2001 Authorization Unilateral Military Force Against Terrorists (AUMF), which pretty much allowed Bush to wage war wherever he wanted.

(5,969 posts)A start would be having a detailed plan on how much it costs and how to pay for it. Anything new from BS regarding these points?
You have to pay for it just like the other countries do it: By paying for your insurance and with your taxes. There is no mystery and if BS had any clue about this beyond his slogans, he could be honest about what percentage of your pay check will be necessary to pay for it. 10%? 20%?
And regarding taking the current costs as a starting point for what is already paid, there are companies who spend way more in providing good healthcare plans to be attractive for employees. That has absolutely no relevance on the costs an employee in another company with shitty plans would have to pay.

Social Security didn't start out covering who it does now - kids whose parents died, etc. That took decades to expand
It's similar to those on the right who are convinced that shutting down Planned Parenthood is a simple solution to "end abortion," because it makes sense on paper, and gives them a demon to blame, when it's actually a very complex issue. It's become dogma, despite the expertise of those who actually understand the societal, personal and political forces that contribute unplanned pregnancy, and how the problem would be made worse by simply shutting down Planned Parentood. Even GOP polticians who know better continue to bang the drum against Planned Parenthood because it's now political and tribal heresy to speak the truth about the catastrophic damage of shutting down Planned Parenthood and "shifting all that money to adoption fees."
Those who see Planned Parenthood as a dragon to be slayed believe "reality endorses" their simple solution any time there is the rare abortion that leads to complicatins, because to someone with a hammer, everything looks like a nail. They shun experts who don't confirm their bias.
Bernie attacks anyone who dares to disagree with his math - no matter how expert and unbiased they are. Not a good trait for a POTUS.

I admit that I never considered sanders to be a serious candidate and never understood sanders appeal. sanders has no significant legislative accomplishments in his time in Congress in large part because sanders never bothered to attempt to get his fellow members of congress to support his programs. In the real world, it takes hard work and getting along with people to get major legislation passed. I was not surprised with sanders admitted that he does not try to get along with his fellow members of congress and that he was not good at pleasantries

I agree with the NYT description of their decision not to endorse sanders in that sanders is too inflexible and that he is not able to compromise. Compromise is key to getting legislation adopted in the real world

How is sanders going to get anyone in Congress to pay attention to this proposal without his magical voter revolution?

(10,444 posts)A Separate Reality: Further Conversations With Don Juan is a book written by anthropologist/author Carlos Castaneda, published in 1971, concerning the events that took place during his apprenticeship with a Yaqui Indian Sorcerer, Don Juan Matus, between 1960 and 1965.
In the book Castaneda continues his description of his apprenticeship under the tutelage of Don Juan. As in his previous book, The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge, Castaneda describes the experiences he has with Don Juan while under the influence of the psychotropic plants that Don Juan offered him, peyote (Lophophora williamsii) and a smokable mixture of what Castaneda believed to be, among other plants, dried mushroom of the genus Psilocybe. The main focus of the book centered on Don Juan's attempts at getting Carlos to See, a practice best described as, in Castaneda's own words, "perceiving energy directly as it flows through the universe".
The book contains an introduction, an epilogue and two separate parts. Part One, "The Preliminaries of 'Seeing'", describes his re-initiation into the apprenticeship from which he withdrew in late 1965, and also describes his introduction to another brujo (sorcerer) named Don Genaro. Part Two, "The Task of 'Seeing'", elaborates on the mental processes involved with Seeing, and begins with Castaneda realizing that the plants are a necessary tool to arrive at Seeing.

But beyond ideology, race and turnout, a chief reason for Mr. Bidens success has little to do with his candidacy. He became a vehicle for Democrats like Ms. King who were supporting other candidates but found the prospect of Mr. Sanders and his calls for political revolution so distasteful that they put aside misgivings about Mr. Biden and backed him instead.
In phone interviews, dozens of Democrats, mostly aged 50 and over, who live in key March primary states like Massachusetts, Virginia, Michigan and Florida, said that Mr. Bidens appeal went beyond his case for beating President Trump. It was his chances of overtaking Mr. Sanders, the only candidate in the vast Democratic field they found objectionable for reasons personal and political.....
These voters willingness to unite against Mr. Sanders helped Democratic Party leaders stave off his insurgent campaign and has made Mr. Biden the all-but-certain Democratic nominee. The convergence behind Mr. Biden also highlights a critical difference between this years primary and what happened to the Republican Party in 2016. Four years ago, establishment Republicans were openly skeptical of Mr. Trump after his victories in early primary states, but a fractured field and split primary vote allowed him to amass an insurmountable delegate lead, reshaping the party in the process.....
Ahead of Mr. Sanderss presidential run in 2020, his campaign did not concern itself with smoothing tensions among voters who supported Mrs. Clinton in 2016. He did not seek the endorsements of many party leaders, who were always unlikely to back him, but could have been swayed from being openly antagonistic to ambivalent.
As a result, after a strong finish in Iowa and wins in New Hampshire and Nevada, Mr. Sanders did not benefit from an assumed truth of presidential campaigns: that early-state victories help bring in voters from other factions. Instead, people like Lori Boerner of McLean, Va., said Mr. Sanderss performance sent them searching for a candidate who could stop his rise, and after the South Carolina primary, they landed on Mr. Biden.
The vast bulk of the party does not like sanders which is why Joe Biden is going to the nominee

"From Bernies perspective, dropping out of a race once you have no chance of winning is peculiar behavior that can only be explained by the work of a hidden hand. For most politicians, though, it is actually standard operating procedure. Only Sanders seems to think the normal thing to do once voters have made clear they dont want to nominate you is to continue campaigning anyway."

When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

Still... absurd posts like this continue to tickle my funny bone.

(53,061 posts)An article title " The Democrats do not deserve our vote".
Which decried supporting the Democratic Party as the lesser of two evils and equated it with the Republicans.
I thought that the OP was unaware that Stalin promoted his image within the Soviet Union as "Uncle Joe".
Perhaps that was generous, could it be that it was intended as a tribute?
Every time he posts he continues to undermine Sanders not elevate him.

(96,043 posts)During the WWII alliance with the Soviet Union, 'Uncle Joe' gained some currency as a reference to Stalin, and I feel quite certain he has no idea what a person of impish humor might make of that.
I recently ran upon a fellow here who seemed to have no idea who Mr. Norman Thomas was, or to know anything about the standing of the Socialist Party he led nationally during and before the Roosevelt era.

(96,043 posts)I am under the impression it was a domestic coinage in the U.S., playing off our 'Uncle Sam'. In English writing of the period I have seen 'Joe for King' used for teasing people who talked up the Communist Party there. Not sure it was safe to have made such a familiar reference in Moscow --- I recall an instance where someone did a long stretch in gulag over parking his coat on a handy bust of Lenin while he tended to some household repair....
In England by the way, the Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek was referred to by some music hall comedians at the time as 'General Cash My Check"....
