Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBernie's campaign less than one hour ago.
Does this look like anything good is coming out of talks? Bernie is not dropping out anytime soon. In fact, it looks like they will ratchet UP the attacks not down.
To me, this looks like Bernie will not stop until he helps his favorite candidate win.

(11,177 posts)I think the crazies that he has hired stroke his ego and praise him to his face so much that he just does what they want. He seems delusional enough to believe what he is being fed.
I would like all the things he campaigns for to happen. Every day he makes himself more marginal and more of a punchline, those things move farther from happening.
I don't really think he is directly aware of putin's work, but many who lead him about do.

(11,177 posts)That would call for more sophistication and logistics than I think he can muster.
I think most candidates get pushed and pulled by their handlers. Those professional campaign guys have axes to grind, but mostly just want the paycheck. They are masters at manipulating their charges. I think Bernie is so out of it that he is more susceptible to being handled. He seems to be a sucker for flattery.

(1,076 posts)This is laughable to me.
You don't run for office if you're a marshmallow pushover who can be bullied by any two-bit schmuck with an agenda.
Politicians, even the good ones, are no one's fool, and have a strong will, massive ego, and a huge chunk of a shark's cunning thrown in for good measure. You can't handle the pressure of the campaign trail and political office without those qualities.
It's the rare politician who is a naive and weak little lamb. It just doesn't happen, because those types wither away in an instant from the rough and tumble of politics.

(11,177 posts)This is not a laughing matter to me.
I don't know what gods you served as staff, but all the very good people that I worked for were human beings. Don't tell me that campaign staff with agendas don't move campaigns. Having a strong will and massive ego is exactly why they are manageable. It has nothing to do with pressure. They naturally gravitate to the staff that can shield them from pressure. Those with huge egos are the easiest to manipulate. An outsized ego is not a quality.

(1,076 posts)This is downright Trumpian in its incoherence.
A candidate is responsible for his campaign, and his staff does only what he lets them do. If his handlers are more powerful than he is, it's because he is too weak to rein them in. Otherwise, he's the one condoning whatever they're up to, if not outright directing them to behave this way.
Good grief, the man has been in politics for over 30 years. He is no innocent lamb being hoodwinked by a bunch of Machiavellian highbinders. They are doing what he's okay with them doing, and it doesn't matter if he's actively or passively encouraging them. They are following his lead--no one else's.

(11,177 posts)I'm saying he is irresponsible. He has let ego and narrow vision put off all of the things he said he wanted to do. Just look at the horrible hiring he is responsible for. While he pretends to run for office, his hirees do crap that he lets get by. He hasn't the will to confront people who tell him what he wants to hear.

(96,043 posts)Against Sanders, the facts of his open support for Communists in the Caribbean and Central America into the Reagan era, as well as his support for the Iranian Revolution, would be what was dinned in. Sanders is often praised by his followers for 'consistency' throughout his political career, and that is where he was at its beginning. These are not smears, these are positions of a party he stood as elector for in a Presidential election. It is hard to claim a man does not support positions of a candidate he is an elector for. It can be attempted, but not with success. 'Crazy Bernie the Commie' is simply too fat a target to be passed up, and it would not be.
Mr. Biden has a whole structure of Party identity to rely on in the question of Social Security. Everyone knows it is a Democratic program, everyone knows Republicans are its enemy. The charge becomes noise. The 'Crazy Bernie the Commie' line is different, there is just enough fact, and fact not too widely known, to give it real bite. Especially among older voters, who were of age during the Cold War. And the line would be helped along by Sanders inability not to say that one extra sentence to try and justify his youthful foolishness. Of course he wasn't really youthful, he was nearing forty years of age. No one really cares if 'Red China' reduced poverty, no one really thinks that quite excuses the Great Leap Forward or the Cultural Revolution or Tiananmen Square. Just as no one, particular people of Cuban heritage in Florida, gives the north end of a southbound rat whether Castro got more people able to read.

(96,043 posts)My comments are in response to a Sanders campaign staffer projecting how Mr. Biden would be attacked, in her view quite successfully, by Republicans in campaigning against Trump. Why a projection, based on readily available and uncontested facts, of a likely attack line against Sanders, in a campaign against Trump and Republicans, should be regarded as an offense against every law of God and Man, is unclear to me. Show me how Sanders defends himself against the attack, pressed home in news coverage of rallies (video or otherwise) and the steady bombardment of attack ads on the airwaves, and of crafted personal communications on social media. These are things no Democrat wants to do to Sanders, out of concern for the sensibilities and loyalties of his supporters and followers. Our open enemies will have no such compunction.

(1,076 posts)Day after day, too many of you have accused other candidates and their supporters of being warmongers, sellouts, corporatists, centrists, fake liberals, traitors, stupid, deluded, liars, and more vile calumny.
But now when people push back and criticize your Dear Leader or expose his flaws, the serious problems with some of his positions or statements that can doom his electoral chances, and the paucity of his "ideas" and pie-in-the-sky"policies," you fall apart like a dollar store gift box in the rain. You take your toys and go home, both in the public square and, worst of all, on election day, rather than facing reality and doing the adult thing of owning/defending what you stand for--or, if it proves untenable, changing your mind and acting from there.
So go, poor little delicate flower, and take your perfect candidate with you. I, for one, am sick of the hypocrisy so many of you exhibit in thinking that you can be as insulting and demeaning as you want to those who have legitimate differences of opinion from yours, but how dare anyone even think your candidate and his supporters don't fart rainbows and pretty pink unicorns.

(2,657 posts)On another topic, tell us, Briahna, if having the primaries was so terrible, how come I never saw your guy, Bernie Sanders, request that the primaries be suspended? Doesn't that imply that he was OK with them too? If so, why are have you been acting like states have been so terrible because they have been holding their primaries? Also, the DNC does not pick when states have their primaries. That is between the state Democratic party members and the state government.

(1,076 posts)The primaries or caucuses are determined by state law, not choice, in nearly all states.
California changed their law in 2017 so that their primaries would happen on Super Tuesday. In the past, they held their primary on the first Tuesday in June. They got tired of having no weight on the nomination process, and moved it up--by law.
So there is no "choice" in the matter. The primaries are law, unless there's a compelling reason to change the date.
