Washington Post-Enough with the excuses, It's time for Sanders to release his tax returns

It has been more than a month since Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told a national audience during a CNN town hall that he would release 10 years of his personal taxes “soon,” adding, “We have to do just a few little more things.” Five weeks later, it seems those “little” things still aren’t done; he told CBS on Sunday that “we have it all done and it’s just a question of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”

Enough with the excuses, Senator. These sorts of shenanigans — and make no mistake, that’s exactly what they are at this point — both reduce the pressure on cowardly congressional Democrats to pursue President Trump’s personal and corporate tax returns, and endanger Democrats’ hopes of taking back the presidency in 2020. The progressive positions that Sanders champions, including Medicare-for-all, expanded Social Security and increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour, are much too important to both the future of our country and our own personal finances to risk them over tax returns.

Trump broke with decades of precedent in refusing to make his tax returns public when he was running for president. The result? Not only don’t we know our president’s net worth, we also have little idea how he earned his fortune or how he makes his money now. Minus his paperwork, it’s hard to determine whether Trump is using the White House as a just-in-time moneymaking opportunity, violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution, and/or even paying his fair share of taxes at all.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

the word 'soon' doesn't cover it. It's time for the Senator from Vermont to cough up the tax forms. He's had plenty of time and this op-ed writer is correct: the excuses are lame.

Personally, I don't think any candidate should be allowed on the debate stage until adequate tax forms and information are released. We have a grifter sitting in the WH right now, another tax release cry-baby.

We all file taxes, and we know, once they're filed, there's no 'dotting of i's and crossing of t's." They're filed. That's your return. It's official. You can't fiddle with it.
And it's not hard to release them. You have a paper copy, or you have an electronic copy, and if you don't have either, you can get a copy from the IRS or your state tax authority.

AT THE SAME TIME... if we're going to demand that every Dem candidate release tax returns, we must make a very big deal about Trump NOT releasing his. Nothing sticks with him, I know, but "What's he hiding?" should be asked every day of Trump. We know he and his campaign are entirely capable of the hypocrisy of combing through the opponent's returns and finding some tiny thing-- "You deducted your SUNGLASSES!" and making a federal case about it.

Unilateral release is counter-productive. Must beat on Trump about his refusal to release.

Wed Apr 3, 2019, 08:48 PM
Apr 2019

I am not sure that the IRS will automatically come after someone for such a tactic. So dotting the "i's" may involve more that blotting out SS numbers, phone numbers and addresses on a publicly released return. One would assume that a person who has been a politician for almost 40 years would know the technique for releasing tax returns for public viewing. What's the holdup.

Either Bernie is hiding something big, OR he just doesn't believe that a politician should have to release his or her tax returns. If it is the latter, he should just come out and say it.

Democratic lawmakers are proposing a pay raise for teachers, and they plan to pay for it by eliminating a tax cut for the top 1 percent of earners.

The proposal would give states and school districts more than $50 billion over the next 10 years to “increase teacher compensation and recruit and retain a strong, diverse workforce.”

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/388795-dems-want-to-scrap-tax-cut-for-rich-to-fund-teachers-raises

Senate Democrats are proposing one trillion dollars in higher taxes over the next ten years including a nearly $600 billion income tax increase, a business tax increase, an increase to the death tax, and a capital gains tax increase.

https://www.democrats.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Senate%20Democrats'%20Jobs%20and%20Infrastructure%20Plan.pdf

Bernie didn't originate, nor does he own, or soley hold the concept of taxing the rich. Why do you think that he caucuses with Democrats, as you like to point out, and uses Democratic party resources when he runs for POTUS.... We are the party of the people, not Wall Street.

Wed Apr 3, 2019, 09:11 PM
Apr 2019

That allows the tax burden in the current year to be shifted to a future year at a lower tax rate. It is a common and legal practice. I read that Bezos' annual paycheck salary is only something like $100,000. But he can get, say $30 million, in stock for that same year. He shifts the tax burden on the $30 million from the top tax bracket to 15% by holding the stock for 2+ years. Since he has been CEO of Amazon from Day 1, every year he has millions in stock holdings meeting the longer that 2 years held standard every year and he can chose to cash the stock out at the lower rate, or hold it.

Bezos IS NOT running for President, where a public release of tax returns to show a person isn't dirty is expected.

BTW, the issue isn't Bezos paying his PERSONAL taxes. As best can be told, he has done that, abeit with the trick that ALL CEO's use of taking most of their salary as stock payments, allowing them to delay paying some income taxes while throwing the taxes that will be paid into a much lower tax bracket.

If he removes stuff from the public copies, does the IRS even care.

My guess is Bernie is likely a millionaire several times over and has lots of investments, some in companies that he may be reticent to acknowledge having investments in. Personally, I am ok with a person having investment that he or she may be ashamed of, as long as they are legal and the person didn't personally invest the money (but rather had a fund company, Thrust or financial adviser make the investment without their involvement in selecting them (the adviser would only be required to follow a set of requirements that could have been loose enough to now be embarrassing).

tRump's tax returns? Washington Post says...peep.

These fucking grandstanding republicans in journalist clothing are pathetic. They're so brave fighting for what's right when the target is a Democrat (Sanders, in this case, being an honorary member for the presidential run) but so feckless when it comes to republican malfeasance.

Sure, Sanders should release his tax returns to meet requirements but it just shows how little integrity these media companies have when it's obvious just how little and how poorly they covered tRump not ever releasing his tax returns...just one among his many crimes committed.

And that's not all! Google "trump tax returns site:washingtonpost.com" for about 26,100 results from WaPo's website alone.

Wed Apr 3, 2019, 11:59 PM
Apr 2019

Of course we can only speculate, but I cannot think of any positive reasons why he has dodged releasing his tax returns for the last ten (or even just three) years - but there are plenty of more insidious reasons that come to mind.

- Is he ashamed of his earnings? Ashamed because they are too small (hardly likely, considering his political platform, but what do I know?)
- Or because they are too high? Embarrassing to be a millionaire when you rail against millionaires.
- Is he frantically changing them to hide damaging info? Things that will counter his political platform? Is his fortune invested on hated and reviled Wall Street, perhaps? In hedge funds or big pharma? Overseas?
- Or perhaps because he is running out the clock on tax evasion? The statute of limitations is three years, so if he has problems with his 2015 filings, that might be the reason.

Plenty of damaging reasons, but as I said, I cannot think of one positive reason to avoid releasing one's tax returns when it is expected of political candidates, and one's party (sic) is trying to build a case against a president who has plenty of nefarious economic dealings which the party hopes to expose thru the release of said president's tax returns.

Could it be that the delay is because of how long it takes to re-rile separately? (And it's unclear if such a thing is possible.)

Are there questions about Jane's financial details that need to be separated from Bernie? And if so, people will still wonder what it is that is being hidden.

Why was Bernie willing to "sign off" on a joint tax return at the time? And why does he (or his campaign) now feel the need for a "do-over"?

What EXACTLY is going on? These are legitimate questions that people deserve the answers to.

I think it's time that Bernie Sanders live up to the "honesty and transparency" standards that he's always demanding of others.
