candidates, two are sitting Democratic U.S. senators, one a Democratic ex- governor of Massachusetts, and another a Democratic businessman and mayor, none polled at or above 5% consistently, even among those Democrats for whom their race is an important and desirable quality.

And let's deplore Democrats because a Democratic Hispanic candidate is an ex- Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Democratic mayor of San Antonio but didn't get enough backing, even from the 37% of Americans who also identify Hispanic, to become president this time.

But let's remember that that's because this election most Democrats of all colors are choosing to back their own best chance against Trump regardless of color. A grim reminder of just how much is at stake. It's about race and ethnicity all right, but not the way Democrats usually think of it.
