Some CNMI lawmakers seek investigation of governor's alleged corruption, fraud
Some lawmakers in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on Tuesday asked for a special legislative committee to investigate Gov. Ralph Torres for allegations of public corruption, fraud, waste and abuse of public funds.
This comes a little over a month after the FBI executed multiple search warrants on Saipan, including at Torres' office on Capital Hill and the office of the island's exclusive casino operator, Imperial Pacific International.
The CNMI governor, in a statement Tuesday night, said the request is a "coordinated attack" against him and called it an "obsession" to take him down without regard to legal processes.
"With todays request, the House minority and their supporters want to further divide our community because of politics that seeks to disrupt a vision of a stronger and more prosperous Marianas," Torres said.
