CNMI government austerity ends next week

BEGINNING on Nov. 24, 2019, CNMI government work hours will be restored from 72 hours biweekly to 80 hours biweekly, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres announced on Thursday.

He said this means that the last austerity Friday will be observed on Friday, Nov. 22, 2019.

It was on May 30, 2019, when the governor signed Directive 2019-004 to implement a 72-hour work schedule beginning with the pay period that started on June 23, 2019.

“Although it was a difficult decision to make, it was necessary in order to protect our government employees from other more drastic options that would have had more severe impacts. It was further necessary to ensure that our government obligations and services remained stable,” he said in Directive 2020-001 signed on Nov. 14, 2019.
