Samoan minister of revenue defends loans

The Government has the ability to pay off its $1.01 billion debts and is already servicing most of its loans.

Minister of Revenue, Tialavea Tionisio Hunt, said this in response to questions from the Samoa Observer as well as increasing public concern over the Government’s debt levels.

Speaking in his capacity as the Minister responsible for revenue collection, Tialavea said loan repayments are a priority for the Government and this is confirmed in the annual budget appropriations.

“We can afford it. Each annual budget, the loans are our first priority. Go and look at the budget book and you can see from there, how much we are paying annually and it is not $1 billion.
