Puerto Rico company fined $3M in raw sewage discharge case

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A development company in Puerto Rico has been fined $3 million for discharging more than 29 million gallons of raw sewage into a storm water system.

A judge on Thursday also ordered Mora Development Corporation to make restitution to a family whose children officials say were affected.

A former project manager previously pled guilty in the case.

The company was accused of discharging raw sewage from a residential development in the northern town of Toa Alta in 2012 and 2013 without a permit from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Officials said the sewage made its way into a river that serves some 80,000 people in the U.S. territory.

Company officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
