Marines' move to Guam could be delayed, again
U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller is quoted by Japan media and wire reports from Washington, D.C., as having testified the plan to move almost one-fourth of the U.S. Marines stationed in Okinawa to Guam could be delayed.
Environmental concerns expressed in Guam, and additional focus on threats from North Korea, are among reasons for the possible delay, according to the media reports quoting Neller's congressional testimony Wednesday in Washington.
The Japan Times, NHK, Jiji Press, UPI and other media organizations reported the commandant's comments.
The plan to move almost 5,000 U.S. Marines to a proposed Marine Corps base in Guam, near Andersen Air Force Base, has been delayed before, and downsized.
