VI WAPA warns residents as lines are energized

ST. THOMAS — As power restoration is taking place across the territory, the V.I. Water and Power Authority issued a statement advising the public about the danger of downed power lines as the system is energized.

WAPA recommends these safety tips after the impact of Hurricane Irma:

• Assume all power lines are energized and deadly:

• Power lines that are de-energized could become energized at any time. A live wire touching the ground can cause electricity to travel through the ground, radiating outward from the contact point. Stay clear.

• NEVER touch a downed power line, and never touch a person or object that is touching a power line.

• If someone is injured as a result of electrical contact, do not touch or move the victim. You can be injured or killed. Call 911.
