About artichokes

Last edited Sun Apr 10, 2016, 02:56 AM - Edit history (2)

Many years ago I became curious about artichokes. I was in a restaurant where the most expensive dish was based on artichokes.

It's funny how I remember my introduction to artichokes, more than I recall the person I was with.

5 seeds cost a lot. You're lucky if you get 1 viable plant.

My sweet little dog is begging me to come to bed. I'll finish this later.

Update: I have a five foot artichoke plant. I'm waiting for the spectacular bloom. Don't get me wrong, I'm not growing this to eat. The edible part is not worth the price. The bloom is however, spectacular.

I get extra money when I have one in a flower arrangement.

What's more inedible?

Artichokes?
Pomegranates?

Whose to choose?

Than there's okra!!! Oh boy! Don't get me started.

By the way, I make an absolutely wicked cold rice salad with pickled artichoke hearts and all sorts of other good stuff. It is yummy.

But plain artichokes... One could choke on them. Don't get me started about okra or pomegranates. Some people call that food?

I learned the way to cook it is with tomatoes. It mitigates the slime.

I have to say, it's the one good thing that came out of met experience of living in the south.

but I do love the juice.

I have some neighbors who grow and cook with them.

I won't complain.

Artichokes with melted butter or mayo? Mmm.

I guess I just like to play with my food.

Yum! And I like pomegranates too, you just have to know how to peel-? them.

My niece is married to a guy from west Africa and he showed us how to deal with them. Hold the fruit under cool to cold water while separating the seeds, the garbage floats while the seeds sink. You can "clean" a whole pomegranate in a few minutes that way.
