Something my mother called "Texas Salad":
Fix a 1 lb box of pasta shells (you can use any shape really) according to directions. Drain it in a strainer and rinse with cold water to stop it cooking. Put it back in the (empty) pot you cooked it in and splash some white vinegar (1/4th cup?..1/3 cup?) over it and toss.
Chop up:
1/2 green bell pepper
2 stalks of celery
a bunch (4 or 5) spring onions with some green top
Throw this in with the shells
in a strainer rinse
1 can of black eyed peas
1 can of yellow whole kernel corn
1 small can of sliced black olives
Add this to the shells and green stuff and mix it all up (ooh...pretty!)
Add a 1/2 teaspoon...whole teaspoon or two.... whatever.... of your fave herbs...minced garlic (of course), oregano, thyme, rosemary....etc
Add a small jar of sliced pimentos with their oil.... stir
Now splash in a couple of shakes of olive oil... stir
Add 1 cup mayo (I just buy an 8 oz jar and use the whole thing)...stir
Now add Worcestershire sauce a shake at a time. I dunno how much. I go by color and taste. It should be a medium beige color and the idea is to kill the sweetness of the mayo...so keep tasting. You may need another splash of vinegar or two.
Stir the whole mess up good and eat. It's even better the next day! (refrigerate it, you moron!)
Many are tempted to add stuff or leave stuff out but I suggest you make it up as per recipe 1st before you start tweaking.
Makes enough for the whole scurvy crew.

Since you say you are following the directions, I will assume you added salt.

(6,452 posts)I got diagnosed with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes last year (the wondrous and holy FSM works in mysterious ways blessed be his noodley appendage), and can't eat pasta anymore. Out of all the things I gave up (candy, cake, pie, ice cream, chocolate, etc.), pasta salad is one of the few things I still crave. Jesus, I'm drooling thinking about it now.

Perhaps I could have just a little macaroni...

(9,597 posts)Put on a little seasoning and sauce and they do the job. They have a slightly more rubbery texture than regular pasta. Kinda like calamari.
I absolutely LOVE pasta and while I would rather have regular pasta, they allow me to "get my fix" when I am dieting.
The only caveat I would add, is that the preservative liquid they come in is disgusting. I wash them very well, then boil them for 4 minutes then pan fry them on high for 2 minutes add seasoning and then they are done. Overall, I am able to get them ready in 1/2 the time it takes to make spaghetti.
And supposedly they REALLY help with digestion. But I don't have that problem so I can't say for sure.

Oh I'm sorry! Don't ban me!!!!!
How about black bean noodles? Ever tried those? I have some (couldn't find them in the asian grocery!!! but they were at Trader Joe's) but haven't used them yet. They are dark purple. They'd LOOK good mixed with reg pasta!
