O’Malley to propose expansion of Social Security benefits, other measures to aid seniors.WaPo

At a time when some Republicans are calling for cuts to Social Security, Democratic candidates have voiced support for expansions of some sort. Sanders has said he would like to expand benefits, while Clinton has been less specific but recently told labor leaders that she would improve benefits for women and lower-income seniors, according to a report by Reuters.

“Our parents and grandparents should be able to retire in dignity -- not poverty,” O’Malley says in his policy paper, a copy of which was shared with The Washington Post. “Yet today in America, too many retirees are struggling to make ends meet.

To pay for his proposals, O’Malley is calling for making workers who earn more than $250,000 a year pay more into the system.

Other provisions of O’Malley’s plan would change the way cost-of-living increases are factored into Social Security payments and impose new requirements on employers with more than 10 workers to provide retirement plans.

O'Malley also says he would not raise the retirement age, which ranges from 65 to 67, depending on when one was born.
