Martin O'Malley

Martin O'Malley worked to brand himself as the Democratic candidate of "actions, not words" during his Iowa Wing Ding speech on Friday.
The former Maryland governor and Baltimore mayor listed the string of progressive accomplishments he hammers on regularly on the campaign trail increasing funding to public education, banning assault weapons, and a four-year freeze on college tuition. He followed each with the same refrain.
"We expanded family leave and voting rights, we passed driver's licenses for new American immigrants and we banned the sale of assault weapons," he said. "Actions, not words. We fought for the DREAM Act, we fought for marriage equality and we won. Actions, not words."
O'Malley earned applause from the crowd for his speech's tough-on-Wall Street tenor. As president, he'd work to reinstate a version of the Glass-Steagall Act, which limited the types of investments banks could make with customers' money.
The next president can't "give a free pass to the bullies of Wall Street to work over the people of Main Street," O'Malley said.
O'Malley offered up plenty of red meat jabs at Republicans for the audience of Democratic loyalists to eat up alongside their chicken wings. Republicans deny everything from climate change to vaccines, he said.
"Give them a few more weeks, and they'll even be shunning Copernicus," he said.
QUOTE: "This election is not about the big banks. It's not about big money taking over our politics. It's about US U period. S period."
BEST MOMENT: The crowd cheered as O'Malley credited President Barack Obama with moving the country forward. "As a nation, we have come a long way since the Wall Street crash and the Bush recession of 2008," he said.
AUDIENCE REACTION: O'Malley regularly gets cheers from Iowans by quoting Bruce Springsteen's song "The River." "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true," he asked Friday at the Wing Ding.

(1,464 posts)Huge standing ovation. I also saw lots of Bernie and Hillary supporters nodding and commenting to each other when he talked about action not words. That made an impression.
I like the new part of stump speech where he says "Progress is a choice". That got a big response.
His volunteers were on point.
They were the last ones at the event. O'Malley closed event down and his supporters were only ones sitting outside signing people up outside after event. I think his team is simply going to outwork everyone.
Sanders is doing big events in Iowa and Hillary is still doing pre-screened events or larger events. O'Malley is doing the smaller events letting people ask as many questions as needed. That matters in Iowa.
