The Democratic race to the left continues.

As they vie to emerge as the progressive alternative to Hillary Clinton, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley are racing to stake out territory to Clinton's political left.
In April, O'Malley endorsed a $15 minimum wage. Sanders did the same within days. On a recent swing through Iowa, Sanders went beyond Clinton's support of paid sick leave to endorse guaranteed vacation time. O'Malley, meanwhile, stumped on his opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership, an enormous trade deal that has become a bête noire for liberals and labor groups. Clinton supported the deal as secretary of state, but has hedged on the deal as a presidential candidate.
Now, O'Malley has an answer to Sanders' plan for tuition-free public college: a series of proposals to eliminate debt for students at all colleges, public and private.
The dueling proposals come after an aggressive push to place student loan debt at the center of the Democratic primary agenda by liberal advocacy groups, notably the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. The effort received a boost when Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) endorsed an unspecified path to debt-free college earlier this year. Clinton intends to roll out a student loan plan later this month.

(46,525 posts)Sorry, but it is a better and more workable plan than Sander's proposal. Plus, O'Malley has used Maryland to prove that his plan can work.
Much better plan, imo. If he was trying to one-up someone, he succeeded.

(23,627 posts)Not knocking the message of Senator Sanders or Secretary Clinton.. this is a good message.. I have listened to all the candidates.. and Gov. O'Malley shows how things can ACTUALLY work out.
And no one.. let me repeat that.. no one, can produce all their proposals within a short time period.. and if we support these types of proposals and goals.. we cannot throw up their hands and give up if they are not done on a given day..
Been there and seen that before..
This is work.. and as supporters need to be willing to put in the work and time..
O'Malley's plan is far more easily achievable. It also makes far more sense in the long term.
I know it isn't as sexy and populist to say, but as I said before, we are a path dependent nation. Moving towards debt free is far more easily attainable with our capitalistic way of doing things.
Let's be real and honest. we have capitalism here in this nation. This plan is a more realistic way of getting back to making college more affordable to everyone.

(11,607 posts)I am gonna post it myself. I have a good many friends that are both Clinton and Sanders supporters.
so a lot of my O'Malley threads drop. The upside is that they don;t turn into assholes (debate this issues but don't crap on my page is my philosophy). I get a few likes and that makes me happy knowing that they are reading.
Slow and steady is how I roll, Auggie. :Hi:
